Portraits of Mooppathis

Old leaves should fall, even if one desires otherwise.
Story of generations inscribed by Time lay latent in the veins of old leaves,
sometimes never read, even by the wind that makes them fall.
But even the rotten leaves teach us certain lessons of life…
of existence…of unfulfilled desires...of impermanence.

The Moopathis form the last generation of their breed,
lives in the village of Chettichal, Kerala, India,
with their traditional attire, a language that is a mix of Kongini and Malayalam,
and a life style that is intimately associated with the environment they live in.
The new generation has almost abandoned all these
traditional features and adopted a more contemporary life style.
Interestingly, even if they are at the end of their journey
most of them have never kept a photograph of their face,
not to tell their attire and environment.
Let us hope this set of pictures would tell something
to the generations waiting to come up.
