TRIBES OF ANAPPANTHAM

Centuries old, the Kadar tribe inhabits the forests of Anappantham. The colony is nestled deep in the Vellikulangara Reserve Forest in Kerala, southern India. The original colony was devastated in a landslip on July 14th, 2005. Several people lost their lives in the disaster. The remaining tribesmen were relocated to the present colony at Shasthampoovam.

This is a photo-documentary about the survivors of the tragedy of 2005. After thirteen years, many have grown into adulthood, and some have grown old, and some have left the world. The new generation has begun to accept the modernity that has reached the forests. Many have had decent education, most get good healthcare, and many are employed outside the forests. This is a story of the community that has respectfully evolved with time just as well as they have survived the calamity.
